Hypernova Rising

About

An independent software company.

Hypernova Rising Inc. was formed around a straightforward idea: build the tools that would help ordinary working businesses most, and build them properly.

Why we exist

The tools nobody builds.

There is a whole class of software that would make an enormous difference to small operators and that almost nobody builds well. Not because it is technically hard, but because that market is easy to serve badly and expensive to serve properly — so it tends to get a cut-down version of something made for somebody else, with the useful parts behind a price nobody in a single-vehicle business is going to pay.

We would rather do the expensive version. That means spending real time understanding how the work is actually done, testing against the conditions it is actually done in, and accepting that some features take three times as long because being wrong is not an acceptable outcome when the thing you are wrong about is somebody's records.

How we are set up

Small, and intending to stay that way.

We are a small company on purpose. Nobody here is waiting on a committee, and there is no layer between the people who make decisions and the people who have to live with them.

That has a cost. We take on less work than a larger firm could, and we say no to things we cannot do properly. We think the trade is worth it. A small team that understands the whole system will beat a large one that each understands a slice of it, particularly when something goes wrong at eleven at night.

We are also independent. We are not building toward somebody else's exit, and we are not obliged to grow faster than we can build. That is what lets us make decisions on a ten-year horizon instead of a quarterly one.

What we hold to

The commitments behind the work.

  1. 01

    Correct beats impressive.

A feature that is right in the ordinary case and wrong in the unusual one is not finished. We would rather ship fewer things that behave correctly at the edges than more things that behave correctly in the demonstration.

  2. 02

    Your information belongs to you.

We do not sell data about the people who use our software, and we do not design products that would need us to. Whatever you put in, you can take back out, in a format something else can read.

  3. 03

    Nothing happens behind your back.

Our software does not quietly change, merge or remove a person's records on its own judgement. Where it has an opinion, it shows it and asks. The person using it stays the one deciding.

  4. 04

    Plain language, everywhere.

In the interface, in the pricing and on this website. If something has a limit, we say what the limit is. If something costs money, we say what it costs. Nobody should have to read carefully to avoid being caught out.

Where we are going

Wider than where we started.

Our roots are in software for working businesses, and that remains the centre of what we do. But the company was not set up to be a single-product business, and we do not intend for it to become one.

There are industries that software has barely touched, and problems in fields with no obvious connection to the ones we know, where the same discipline applies — understand the work, build something that holds up, be honest about what it does. We are actively looking for those, and we expect the range of what we build to keep widening.

If you are sitting on a problem like that, we would like to hear about it.

Work with us.

We read everything that comes in, and we answer.
